Did I Mention Mentoring

When we think of training we think of the classroom, real or virtual, and a trainer, but one of the most successful forms of corporate training in recent years is the development of mentoring.

Mentoring is an effective way of helping people to progress in their careers. It is a partnership between two people (mentor and mentee) normally working in the same department or sharing similar experiences. It is a helpful relationship based upon mutual trust and respect.

The mentor is a guide aiming to help the mentee to find the right direction and help them to develop solutions to career issues. Mentors rely upon having had similar experiences to gain an empathy with the mentee and an understanding of their issues.

A mentor should help the mentee to believe in herself and boost her confidence, asking questions and providing challenges.

Recently the BNET website carried an article about mentoring and highlighted some of the points that have made it the way to learn in the 21st century.

  • It stimulates the creation of relationships throughout the organization.
  • It helps people feel more connected to the organization.
  • It promotes career and leadership development.
  • It encourages big-picture thinking. It supports diversity efforts.
  • It is a way of managing knowledge within the organization.
  • It facilitates the growth and development of high-potential leaders.
  • It aids in the recruitment and retention of talent.
  • It improves technical knowledge.

Try mentoring in your businesses and you too can enjoy the benefits.
